The Residency Program in Cardiothoracic Surgery is a rigorous and comprehensive postgraduate training program designed to prepare physicians for independent practice in adult cardiac surgery. Our mission is to cultivate surgical leaders with exceptional technical expertise, clinical judgment, and academic excellence.
The program provides in-depth exposure to the surgical treatment of cardiovascular and thoracic diseases, combining hands-on operative experience with cutting-edge academic instruction and research opportunities. Residents are trained in open heart surgery, minimally invasive and robotic cardiac techniques and mechanical circulatory support.
- Training with renowned international cardiac surgions 
- Exposure to minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgery, heart and lung transplantations, circulatory support (LVAD, ECMO) 
- Hands-on experience in Adult Cardiac surgery: Coronary Artery Bypass, Aortic Valve, Mitral Valve Replacement and Reconstructive Surgery, Aorta Ascendens, Mycsoma, re-do Cardiac Surgery, surgical treatment of heart rhythm desorders and mini invasive cardiac surgery 
- National and International clinical rotations and research opportunities

The residency spans 5 years
PGY 1 (Foundations of Surgery)
- General surgery (trauma, vascular, abdominal) 
- Surgical critical care 
- Anesthesia 
- Cardiovascular physiology 
- Introduction to cardiac surgery 
- Basic skills lab and simulation training 
PGY 2-3 (Intermediate Training)
- Cardiothoracic intensive care unit rotations
- Imaging and diagnostics (echocardiography, cardiac CT/MRI)
- Research rotation or academic development
- Adult cardiac surgery (coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair/replacement) 
- Pediatric cardiac surgery (introductory exposure) 
PGY 4–5 (Senior and Chief Resident Years)
- Advanced adult cardiac surgery (complex valve, aortic, minimally invasive/robotic) 
- Surgical treatment of heart rhythm desorders 
- Heart and lung transplantation (introductory exposure) 
- Mechanical circulatory support (ECMO, VAD) 
- Supervisory responsibilities and teaching of junior residents 
- Electives and international experiences (optional) 
- Board preparation and career development

Graduates of the Cardiac Surgery Residency Program are prepared for careers in:
- Adult cardiac surgery subspecialties such as coronary artery bypass, aortic valve and aorta ascendens and arcus surgery, mitral valve surgery, heart rhythm surgery, re-do cardiac surgery, mini-invasive cardiac surgery and complex cardiac surgery

- Hospital leadership roles in cardiac surgery departments 
- International fellowships and further subspecialty training 
Application Deadlines:

- Bachelor’s Degree / Medical Doctor (MD) qualification

The tuition fee for the Residency Programs at Central Asian University is $50,000 per year. This fee covers:
